Musical Director

Rising Voices Wessex is looking to appoint a Musical Director to lead community choirs in Poole and Bournemouth that focus on supporting adults affected by cancer to regain health and wellbeing.

We are looking for a director experienced and trained in running choirs who is charismatic and can inspire choir members, irrespective of their musical background, to sing to the best of their ability and experience the joys and sense of achievement that being part of a choir can bring. Given the experience of the Covid crisis we are looking for an individual who would be equally comfortable taking sessions on Zoom until such time as choir practices can resume.

Patience, a sense of fun and a commitment to the Charity’s ethos of inclusivity and giving back to the community will also form a very important part of the director’s role. As well as experiencing the shared joys of music-making the choir environment provides valuable social support for individuals at times of difficulty – personal histories from a number of members are witness to the benefits of being part of these choirs.

The choir has an eclectic repertoire of popular songs, performing to either backing tracks or piano accompaniment – occasionally a cappella. It stages two of its own concerts each year as well as performing at a number of local events, which both fundraise and importantly promote the concept of living well after cancer.

Rehearsals take place on a Monday evening in Bournemouth and Tuesday evening in Poole from 7 to 9pm ideally the new Musical Director would be able to accompany the choir on the keyboard for rehearsals and at events. The two choirs usually perform together and also enjoy a range of organised social events.

Currently during the Covid crisis the choirs meet on Zoom to enjoy singing familiar repertoire, study new songs and work to prepare an on-line choir performance. In the current circumstances, although the post will not be vacant until April 2021 we anticipate that Zoom rehearsals will be continuing possibly until then so that auditions for the director will have to be conducted on Zoom and accommodated within the regular rehearsal schedule.

Rising Voices Wessex is a registered charity managed by a Board of Trustees and a dedicated team of members headed by Dr Alastair Smith one of the Founders and Chair of the Trustees. The new Musical Director would be expected to work together with the Trustees and Steering Group in repertoire planning, on performance planning and attend necessary meetings.

The post will be remunerated at an appropriate rate in line with guidance from Making Music https://www.makingmusic.org.uk/ and the Incorporated Society of Musicians www.ism.org – the rate to be agreed with the successful candidate for the regular rehearsals with additional agreed, specific remuneration for performances and extra rehearsals.

Rising Voices Wessex takes great pride in its sense of community and fellowship, and a warm welcome awaits you! If you would like to be part of a well-respected, established, local choir and have the enthusiasm to grow and nurture the choir as it continues on its exciting journey, please contact Dr Alastair Smith alastairsmith49@gmail.com with your CV and aspirations.
